How to deliver Napera security on millions of switches

This morning we are excited to publicize many months of design and development work that has been going on behind the scenes at Napera and Marvell. As announced in today’s press release, Napera is collaborating with Marvell to deliver the Napera network security experience on Marvell’s Prestera DX and Integrated Secure-Switch-Router platforms. Marvell commands a large market share in the silicon that powers SMB and SME network products, and is the market leader in Ethernet switching silicon.

This is an exciting new paradigm that will enable millions of SMB and SME customers to enjoy the Napera security experience. The secret to creating this new solution was leveraging the high performance Sheeva CPU that Marvell has integrated in the Prestera DX line of switching silicon. Networking vendors who build products using Marvell can offer the Napera security service, delivered as part of Marvell’s production-ready Marvell Total Solution (MTS) software and silicon.

We’ve taken the revolutionary online service that we launched with the Napera N24 (rated 10 out of 10 by Infoworld for ease of setup) and made it even easier to use, with a zero impact deployment that gets customers up and running well within our 10 minute installation time. All of the heavy lifting around network security configuration and management runs in the cloud,  so deployment and management are a snap. This new approach leverages a broad range of different switches to provide IT managers with an affordable and effective way to secure their networks, without the complexity of traditional enterprise solutions or the cost of special purpose hardware.

The real beauty of the solution from the customer perspective is that the management platform is entirely cloud based, requiring only a compatible Marvell-based switch for operation. Within minutes of activating the Napera service, IT managers can see the health of operating system updates, desktop firewalls and anti-virus software that form the first line of defense against malware and other security risks.

I’d like to recognize the extraordinary work of the Napera engineering team in developing this new product, and the people at Marvell for having the vision to support applications that unlock new value in the network infrastructure. The first release of the online service shipped last week and we are looking forward to customer deployments during the summer.
