Gartner survey: SaaS use to explode in 2010

A new Gartner survey of 270 IT and business management professionals from a variety of industries in North America, Europe and Asia/Pacific shows a healthy 95 percent of organizations plan to maintain or grow their SaaS use through 2010.

“SaaS applications clearly are no longer seen as a new deployment model by our survey base, with almost half of those surveyed affirming use of SaaS applications in their business for more than three years,” said Sharon Mertz, research director at Gartner.

Is 2010 the year Network and Systems Management starts moving to the cloud?

2010 is turning into a banner year for companies offering new network and systems management offerings with a cloud based SaaS approach. When we launched Napera Insight, our cloud based network and systems management platform in March, we couldn’t have predicted that first half of this year would be so busy with announcements.

Napera @ Interop NY 2008

Interop NY has been a great show this year. Although always a little quieter than the West Coast event, there were plenty of familiar faces and the combination of Interop with the Web 2.0 conference in the same venue kept the Javits Center busy yesterday.

The Small and Medium Enterprise Migration to Software as a Service

Ten years ago when our team was developing the Firebox appliance at WatchGuard, we included features common to most firewall solutions of the time. One was the so-called demilitarized network, where customers would securely locate their local web servers. Another was an SMTP proxy for email to protect in-house mail servers. And even though the Firebox was an ‘all in one’ appliance, we asked customers to deploy local servers for logging, reporting and management services.

Later at WatchGuard, when we launched one of the first managed security services platforms for small and medium enterprises, one of the challenges our ISP partners faced was the reluctance of customers to outsource security functions. Our partners told us the concept of storing important information offsite was a frequent objection to buying such a service.
